Agustín Caamal Chimal is originally from a small town in the heart of the jungle, in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, southwest of Mexico. His wife was the person who taught him the skill of hammock weaving.
Over time, Agustín fell in love with his looms and weaving became a kind of meditation. He started dreaming about different patterns and exploring new ways to innovate traditional weaving techniques.
To this day, he has created over 50 unique hammock designs and continues to invent new ones. His dream is to learn to read and write, so he can travel and offer hammock weaving workshops in Mexico and beyond.
At ITZ, we have been working with Agustín and his family for more than 8 years. The Káan armchair and ottoman were designed with a collaboration with him in mind, fusing the comfort of hammocks with elegant design and fine carpentry work in endemic woods.
